Categories
How your income and expenses are grouped.
What is the Categories screen?
Categories group your income and expenses (for example “Banking & Payment” or “Office Furniture”). A category can have sub-categories nested underneath it, and can optionally carry a Budget.
Why does this matter?
Categorized spend is what makes reports readable — without it, All Transaction is just a long list of amounts. Categories are also where you set Classification (Asset, for example) and, where relevant, Asset Type.
When would I use this?
- Setting up how spend should be grouped before you start recording transactions
- Creating a sub-category to break a broad group into more detail
- Setting or reviewing a budget for a category
Before you start
You need access to the Categories screen under Finance → Inex to add or manage categories.
Reading the stats

| With Budget | Categories that currently have a budget amount set. |
How to add a category or sub-category
- Open Categories
Go to Finance → Inex → Categories.
- Click Add Category
Click + Add Category, then choose Category for a top-level group or Subcategory to nest it under an existing one.
- Set its classification and budget
Enter a Category Name, choose a Classification (and Asset Type if applicable), and optionally a Budget Amount and Budget Type (Monthly/Yearly/Custom).
The category table
Each row shows the category (with sub-categories nested underneath), Description, Classification, Amount, Budget Amount, and Budget Used. Use the expand arrows or Collapse All to manage the tree view.
